In Review: Duke01 – Fantasmus [Single]

Duke01 is one of those artist that remains underground but really belongs in the limelight, his EP ‘Release The Kraken’ that was released just over a year ago, was a great introduction to his blend of old school hip hop and any other genre of music out there. It was met with high praise due to its originality and distinctive sound, and showcased Duke’s lyrical ability.

His recent release Fantasmus’ follows on from its predecessor: it certainly deserves high recognition and really shows a contrast between Duke’s influences.

The first track ‘One Day’ is a floaty and ambient acoustic track backed with a hip-hop beat with Duke telling a love story about two young individuals who have lost their way.

Lyrically, it’s also a comment on today’s society for the craving to become famous: the girl’s dream is to become a footballers wife and the boy wants to be a rap star (yet hasn’t wrote anything).

‘Papa La Bass’, the second track on the EP is a flowing blend of old school hip hop and funk. There are elements of early Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beasties and Funkadelic, giving that jam-music feel proving that Duke is one of those artists that is all about live music, and you can really hear this in his recent release.

Fantasmus’ is a short but very sweet showcase of Duke’s musical talents, and is available to download for free at: http://duke01.bandcamp.com/album/fantasmus
