A new art exhibition has been revealed featuring some of the athletes who will be competing in the 2012 Olympic Games. The series of portraits, which is part of the National Portrait Gallery exhibition Road To 2012: Changing Pace captures some of the athletes finest moments, both at work and at play. One of the images is of swimmer Ellis Simmonds, who is pictured in a crouched position on a starting block ready to dive into the water. Another captures Aaron Cook the worldwide taekwondo champion in the air doing a flying kick, outside his home in Manchester. Simmonds, who has been the Paralympics champion twice at just the tender age of sixteen, is also depicted in the middle of a training session under the watchful gaze of her coach Billy Pye, at the Wales National Pool in Swansea. She will be competing in four events in the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games. The athlete’s coaches as well as members of their family were also handpicked by photographer Finlay Mackay, due to these people being a crucial element in the athlete’s success. The collection of images will be a part of a three year project, which is now in its second year. The project is sponsored by BT, who is paying for the production of 100 new photographic portraits of the people who will be responsible for making the impending games a reality.
The series of portraits will tell the inspirational stories of the Olympic athletes for many generations to come. It’s hoped that the images will also educate the future generations, as well as to fill them with aspirations.
