Since first establishing himself in the early 2000s as a producer of aquatic, cerebral techno under the Polmo Polpo moniker (which is probably most well known for the 22 minute cover of Arthur Russell‘s ‘Kiss Me Again‘), Perri has variously indulged his interest in Nigerian juju and shantytown funk with one-album wonders Glissandro 70 and dubby disco as Dot Wiggin. But since 2007, he’s been releasing albums under his own name, signaling a singer-songwriterly shift that foregrounds Perri’s considerable talents as a pedal-steel guitarist and fondness for 1970s AM-radio pop.
‘Mr Hollywood’ is the debut single from The Magic, taken from their upcoming album Ragged Gold, released via Half Machine on 11th June 2012.
Recorded over a couple of nights in their studio ‘Mr Hollywood’, is soulful disco pop about the double lives of closeted gay actors, such as Rock Hudson and Carey Grant.
The Magic are brothers Geordie and Evan Gordon, born and bred in the small Canadian city of Guelph, Ontario. They formed, and styled, The Magic in the back room of a now defunct treasure trove of a thrift store in downtown Guelph. With Geordie singing, playing guitar and keys, with Evan on bass, backing vocals and production.
The debut album Ragged Gold is released on Monday 25th June 2012, via Half Machine.
